Synopsis
Bavaria, 1865: In a shack in a forest Otto welcomes the Rani, who he assumes is the midwife, to help with the delivery of his and Violett's child. The child has already been born by the time she arrives. Luckily all is well, although as the seventh son of a seventh son Otto has always been lucky. Otto also now has seven sons of his own. With a breath the Rani transforms Violett into Violets, Otto into an owl, and Otto's first six suns into ducks before leaving with the newborn - Jonas.
London, 23rd May 2025 07:00: Mr John Smith and Belinda awake to another day, and are soon interrupted by their child, Poppy. Belinda turns on the TV where Conrad Clark promises that the weather will be nice - across the UK, Great Britain, and the world.
Conrad appears continuously on TV all around the world. He starts the day with a story - Doctor Who and the Deadly Wish. Downstairs Mr Smith isn't really paying attention as he gives Poppy her breakfast whilst Belinda is preparing for cleaning and shopping. Belinda asks Poppy if she is looking forward to the day, and when Poppy says no a cup drops through the table smashes on the floor. Belinda cleans up the broken cup as Mr Smith heads to work.
As Mr Smith leaves for work he finds a woman on his doorstep, Ruby, who asks if he is known as the Doctor. When Ruby sees Poppy she tells Mr Smith that he doesn't have a daughter. AS Belinda becomes hostile, and makes a telephone call about Ruby expressing doubt, Ruby leaves. In the street she meets sees neighbours people taking out broken cups, including Melanie.
Ruby follows the Doctor, unseen, to where he works, and watches as he passes by a woman in a wheelchair - Shirley. Inside UNIT - the Unified National Insurance Team - the Doctor makes it to his desk with minutes to spare as the tea-lady, Susan, offers Mr Smith a cup of tea. Mr Smith starts talking to a c-worker, Christofer, who fancies their boss, Kate. Christofer is nervous about approaching Kate, and Mr Smith says he is a beautiful man and has nothing to worry about. Christofer's attitude changes at the idea of a man finding another man beautiful as Mr Smith's cup of tea falls through his desk.
As Mr Smith begins work at home Belinda welcomes her mum and auntie Devika. Poppy is being cheeky, but Devika says there is time to drum that out of her so she grows up to be a good little girl, good little wife, then good little mother, like all women should be - according to Conrad, who is never wrong. The conversation turns to the birth of Poppy, and as Belinda struggles to remember another cup crashes through the table.
The Rani has a palace overlooking London where she, Mrs Flood, and Conrad Clark, are based. Conrad is in his room and pauses his transmission as Mrs Flood serves him a sandwich. Conrad is exhausted with all the thinking, and Mrs Flood reassures him that he's doing a very good job as the boy who wants the world to be better. In the corner of the room is a baby - Jonas - who is sustaining the whole world.
Outside UNIT Ruby and Shirley start to recognise each other and Shirley leads Ruby to an encampment where the disabled, and the dispossessed, the ones who do not fit in, live. Ruby tells Shirley she has doubts about the world as she had lived through a different version of 2025. (See 73 Yards). Shirley explains that even though the people in the camp have nothing they are somehow okay. Shirley has no money but has a state of the art wheelchair. And somehow everything is connected to Conrad Clark.
Brian, who is blind, has a theory that as Conrad is not disabled he literally cannot see them. And as Conrad has somehow become God of the Earth, Shirley says they have a plan to take down God. A fully charged tablet, a relic from the Old World, shows the location of Conrad, and may offer a way to block his transmission.
At home Mr Smith, alone with his thoughts, sees things in the TV - including a seeing his granddaughter, Susan, and Rogue, trapped in a hell dimension who gives Doctor a strange warning: Tables don't do that. Upstairs Belinda is awoken by the sounds of cups smashing. In the kitchen she sees Mr Smith and loads of smashed cups. He places on on the table and a few moments later it slips though the table.
To Belinda these slips are normal. As Mr Smith is starting to doubt she makes a telephone call. Shortly afterwards police arrive and take the Doctor away. One of the police is Mrs Flood, and Belinda is taken away as well. Mr Smith and Belinda are taken to the Rani's bone palace.
Inside the palace the Rani tries to jog Mr Smith's memory about who he really is. As the time gets closer to 24th May 2025,n the Rani tells Mr Smith who she is, and the Doctor starts to remember. The Rani tells Belinda that the whole world is just a wish, and that the Doctor had stirred the gods and woke the most ancient of powers. The Rani shows the Doctor the room where Conrad is holding the baby who is the god of wishes - Desiderium.
The Rani boosted the baby's power using the Vindicator to create a web of titanic Voystet-Bladen energy that allowed Conrad to create an entire world. But the world is unable to sustain itself which leads to doubts. The Rani explains she needed the Doctor trapped inside the wish. Normal doubts cracks the structure of reality, but a Time Lords's doubt would rip it open.
The Rani leads the Doctor to a balcony. He can see London and the huge wholes opening up. The Rani wants to destroy the wished world so she can see the Underverse hidden underneath where the One Who Is Lost is hidden - Omega, the creator of the Time Lords.
As the Doctor finally remembers who he is he finds himself alone on the balcony. Back inside the palace the Rani triggers explosives and the balcony plummets towards London.
