Synopsis

Still trying to get Belinda back home to 2025 the TARDIS materialises 500,000 years into the future where the Doctor tries to get another vindicator reading. After changing into a military style uniform they emerge from the TARDIS onto a ship into a line of troopers. They have moments to grab some helmets before jumping to the planet below. The Doctor quickly sets up the vindicator before the troopers all point their weapons at the Doctor and Belinda.

Using psychic paper the Doctor shows he has higher clearance than their commanding officer and Platoon Leader Shaya Costallion accepts the proof and the troopers lower their weapons. Once the vindicator has finished taking a reading Belinda asks them to return her and the Doctor back to the ship. Costallion, thinking the Doctor is testing her, explains that the planet they are on, 6-7-6-7, has an atmosphere charged with galvanic radiation meaning the ship has to come down at retrograde velocity to avoid engine damage; a procedure that would take 5 more hours.

Costallion leads them all to Colony Base 15, a mining operation stripping a layer of Carbon 46. The base had 35 people but contact had been lost 15 days earlier. The base seems to be intact and due to radiation scans are affected - so there is hope that people could be alive.

Inside they find a dead body with a broken neck. They find other bodies - some shot, others with broken necks. Belinda notices that any mirrors have been smashed. Inside the scanners work and trooper Gilliben detects a heart beat. Inside a room they find a woman, Aliss Fenly, who asks, via sign language, if they have come to take home. There is another body in the room and the Aliss tells them she shot her - but it was self defence.

Although the Doctor can communicate via sign language the others have devices that can project their speech as a hologram and pass devices to the Doctor and Belinda.

Aliss tells Costallion that everyone in the base went mad and started to kill each other, and tried to kill her. Aliss seems scared, and Belinda notices that she has hurt her arms and approaches to help. Whilst Belinda tends to Aliss's arm the Doctor, Costallion, and some of the troopers, head to central control.

Inside central control they find a seed well running 5 miles deep where the colonists dropped mercury lines to haul out the carbon 46. Costallion tells the Doctor she is from the Lombardo. When the Doctor asks if Lombardo is a joint foundation with Earth Costallions says she's never heard of Earth, or of the human race.

As Belinda is talking with Gilliben she mentions Earth and Gilliben tells he she has never heard of Earth. At that moment Belinda thinks she sees something behind Aliss, but there is nothing there. As Belinda pastes cream onto Aliss's wrists Aliss also says she has never heard of the human race. As she is bandaging her wrists she once again glimpses something behind Aliss. Another trooper, Sabba, also thinks he saw something behind Aliss. Gilliben asks Aliss to turn and also glimpses something.

Sabba tells Aliss to remain still whilst Habbo slowly moves around her. Aliss pleads for them to stop, and as Hanno moves directly behind Aliss she is catapulted into the air before landing on the ground and breaking her neck.

In central control the Doctor manages to see corrupted video footage of the start of the problems where one of the miners starts going mad, saying he doesn't know what it is. With something as the back of his mind the Doctor asks Costallion about the local sun which, 400,000 years ago was Xtonic star. Costallion said after the wars all the carbon was stripped from the planet. Carbon 46: diamonds. The entire surface of the planet used to be made of diamond - when the planet was called Midnight.

Realising he has been to the planet before the Doctor rushes back to the room where he finds Aliss and dead trooper. The troopers begin to get agitated, which some thinking Aliss was the one who killed Hanno. Aliss then admits she know there is something behind her. Aliss explains that something came out of the Well, and Belinda works out that if you go behind the thing that is behind Aliss - the midnight point on a clock face - you die. Paleen points a gun a Aliss, thinking the solution may be to simply kill her, until Aliss says if he does the thing would go behind him.

Paleen never trusted the Doctor and with Costallion letting the Doctor issue commands he decides to take control, with Sabba seconding him. Paleen moves in front of Aliss as Sabba moves behind her - and is catapulted into the air. Scared Aliss rotates and as other troopes end up behind her they are also catapulted into the air. On Costallion's order Aliss rotates 180 degrees and Paleen is catapulted into the air and collides with a wall.

Castillion thinks they should retreat, but this would mean leaving Aliss behind. Instead the Doctor tries to address the thing behind Aliss and hears whispering - something Aliss cannot hear which could be how she survived going mad. Suddenly realising why the mirrors were broken the Doctor tells everyone to get ready as he tells Costallion to fire at a pipe causing mercury to escape and form a curtain behind Aliss that reflects the thing.

Aliss is pushed forward and, free of the thing, escapes from the room with the Doctor, Belinda, and the troopers. As the airlock can only take 6 people at a time the Doctor, Belinda, Costallion, and Gilliben remain in the base. Belinda can hear whispering and realises the thing is now behind her. After discussing physiognomy with the Doctor Costallion shoots Belinda, and the thing transfers to her. As the Doctor helps Belinda Costallion runs to the Well and falls in.

When Belinda recovers she is back inside the TARDIS.

Back on board the ship Gilliben is explaining to the commanding officer that Costallion should be commended. Gilliben also mentions the Doctor. And the commanding officer - Mrs Flood - seems more interested in the Doctor's vindicator.

When Gilliben hears a noise (the TARDIS dematerialising) she goes to investigate where she meets Vivo - who glimpses something behind Gilliben's back.
