Synopsis

Venice, 1580. Guido, realising there is little future in Venice for his daughter 17 year old daughter Isabella, asks Signora Rosanna Calvierri is Isabella can join her school. Rosanna accepts, and asks Guido to say goodbye to his daughter.

On present day Earth Rory is at his stag party. A huge cake arrives, and everyone is expecting a stripper; instead the Doctor emerges - killing the mood of the party. The Doctor tells Rory that Amy tried to kiss him, and the mood gets even worse when he says she's a great kisser.

The Doctor, as an early wedding present, takes Amy and Rory somewhere romantic - Venice, 1580. The Doctor is stopped by an inspector who wants to look at his papers, trying to stop the plague from entering Venice, which is under quarantine. The Doctor shows his psychic paper, showing the Doctor as a holy man, Amy as a Viscountess and Rory as Amy's eunuch.

Looking out across a plaza, the Doctor, Amy and Rory see Guido looking for his daughter. He sees her in a line of girls, but she does not recognise him. As the girls move on the Doctor goes over to Guido. Guido tells the Doctor about the Calvierri school. That, combined with the fact that Rosanna is keeping Venice quarantined, makes the Doctor curious.

Inside the school Francesco interrupts Rosanna as she is hydrating to tell her about Guido accosting them.

Separated from the Doctor, Amy and Rory have time to discuss past adventures, whilst it dawns on Rory that he really is in Venice, 1580. They heart a scream, and investigating find a woman being attacked by a vampire. Amy chases the vampire, Francesco, but he disappears in the water.

The Doctor finds his way into the school. He looks at himself in a mirror when five girls appear behind him, but their reflection does not appear. Escaping the Doctor runs in to Amy, and both say they have just met a vampire.

They all make there way to Guido's house, who tells them about a tunnel underneath the school. Amy has a plan to get accepted in to the school so she could open the trapdoor at the end of the tunnel. Both the Doctor and Rory are against this, and Guido then tells the Doctor he has a stash of gunpowder that could help. Amy's plan is the only one that will work, and as they have seen the Doctor, Amy suggests Rory should pose as her brother.

Rory is not keen on going to a school of vampires. The Doctor says they are not a vampire, but does ask what can be so bad that they don't mind people thinking that they are vampires.

In the school Rory says that their parents are dead, which is why he wants them to accept Amy. As they have a reference from the King of Sweden (thanks to the Doctor's psychic paper) Rosanna accepts Amy. After Rory leaves Amy is taken to a dormitory and starts to talk to Isabella. Isabella tells Amy of a room below the school.

Amy makes her way to a courtyard underneath the school and open a gate. She is caught and taken to the room Isabella spoke about. When the Doctor and Rory arrive there Amy is nowhere to be seen.

Amy is taken to a room where there is a green light. Rosanna recognised the psychic paper, and questions Amy. Amy is strapped in to a chair as Rosanna bites her neck.

In the courtyard the Doctor and Rory find bodies where all the moisture - not just the blood - has been taken out. More vampires arrive, and they run in to the school.

Rosanna explains to Amy about how they first they drink her until she is dry and then replace it with their blood. If she survives then there are 10,000 husbands waiting for her in the water. Amy kicks out a Rosanna, hitting a perception filter. For a brief moment Rosanna's true form is revealed. Hearing a noise in the corridor Rosanna and Francesco go to investigate, whilst Isabella sneaks in to free Amy.

In the corridor the Doctor and Rory run into Rosanna and Franceso. Isabella, Amy, Rory and the Doctor make their way down a tunnel back towards Guido. Isabella can no longer stand the sunlight. When the Doctor goes back to help her the door closes, and the hinges are electrified.

In the school Isabella is pushed in to the waters of Venice as a punishment for her betrayal. Something under the water pulls her under. As Rosanna returns to her room she finds the Doctor sitting in her chair. The Doctor and Rosanna question each other, the Doctor learns they the Saturnynes. They are running from the cracks, through which they saw the silence.

After the Doctor leaves Rosanna talks to her girls. Her perception filter is malfunctioning, and she keeps revealing her true form - a giant fish like creature. The Doctor realises she is going to sink Venice. In the water there are 10,000 husbands, and with the girls she has transformed aims to repopulate Earth.

The girls attack Guido's house, and the Doctor, Rory and Amy escape. Guido goes back in, and surrounded by the girls ignites the gunpowder, destroying the house.

In the school Rosanna activates a device that starts affecting the atmosphere. Clouds appear in the skies, and it starts to rain. The Doctor locates the device - in Rosanna's chair. The Doctor tells Rosanna her girls have gone, but she will not turn off the device.

Back in Venice Rory and Amy run in to Francesco. Rory starts a fight, but when Amy shines sunlight reflected from a mirror Francesco explodes in to dust.

Rosanna has locked the controls of the device. The Doctor tells Amy and Rory to pull out every wire whilst he goes on to the roof of a bell tower to turn off the transmitter. Straight away the clouds dissipate and sunlight returns.

Back at the school Rosanna tries to return to the 10,000 in the water. Her perception filter is still malfunctioning, and jams in human form. The Saturnynes in the water no longer recognise her as she jumps in to the water.

As they are about the leave Venice all sound disappears; there is nothing but silence.
