Tegan asks the Doctor to take her to Little Hodcombe to visit her grandfather, local historian Andrew Verney. They arrive during a reconstruction of the English Civil war, led by Sir George Hutchinson. When Tegan asks about her grandfather she finds that he has been missing for some time. Sir George seems to be taking the games a little too seriously and Tegan is designated the Queen of the May, a human sacrifice. The Doctor takes an interest in the local church, and finds Will Chandler who came from 1643. Will tells the Doctor of the time that the Malus came, and the Doctor finds it concealed in the church. The Malus uses psychic projections to feed of the fears to the locals. Sir Georges mind, and the war games, have re-awoken the Malus. The Doctor finds a way to break the psychic link, and the Malus destroys Sir George, the church and itself.
