Programme Description

The Doctor receives a warning from the White Guardian and materialises the TARDIS on an an Edwardian racing yacht - although instead of being a seafaring craft it is space-faring.

The yacht is part of a space race, and there are many other ships racing for the ultimate prize - Enlightenment - on offer from the Guardians.

The Buccaneer commander Captain Wrack seriously covets the prize, and using power from the Black Guardian destroys other ships in the race.

Captain Wrack, with the aid of Turlough, is thrown overboard, and the Edwardian yacht wins the race. The Guardians banish the Eternals who were crewing all the ships, and Enlightenment is offered to the Doctor, who declines. Turlough hurls the prize at the Black Guardian, severing his contract.

Bloopers and Mistakes

Early on in the story, when the sailors in Striker's ship are running up the stairs, one of them stumbles slightly.

When Tegan enters Wrack's cabin she's talking (with her eyes open) when she's frozen by Wrack. Then cut to another shot of Tegan, with her eyes closed this time.

Notes and Trivia

This story concludes the Black Guardian trilogy that began with Mawdryn Undead.
