Susan has been travelling with the Doctor since he left Gallifrey. She often referred to the Doctor as 'grandfather', although it is not known if she really was his granddaughter. She was resident in the TARDIS with the Doctor whilst she was a student at Coal Hill School; her unusual behaviour piqued the interest of two of her teachers which led them to 76 Totters Lane. She was the first member of the TARDIS crew to depart.

Barbara was a history teacher at the Coal Hill school. Eager to find out more about Susan's advanced knowledge she and Ian Chesterton followed Susan back to Totter's Lane. Thinking Susan was being held captive in a police box she forced her way into the TARDIS. Being a history teacher Barbara was able to see the periods which she taught about, although when the Daleks' time machine became available she and Ian were able to return to their own time.

Ian was a science teacher at the Coal Hill school. Eager to find out more about Susan's advanced knowledge he and Barbara Wright followed Susan back to Totter's Lane. Being a science teacher Ian was able fascinated by the technology of the TARDIS, although when the Daleks' time machine became available he and Barbara were able to return to their own time.

Vicki was the only survivor of a crashed spaceship after the only other survivor was killed and joined the TARDIS crew rather than be left behind. Coming from Earth in the future she often found Ian and Barbara almost primitive as she was far more technologically aware. During the Trojan war she fell in love with Troilus, and stayed behind on Earth adopting the name Cressida.

Steven was a space pilot who was captured by the Mechanoids and held captive when he crashed on Mechanus. He escaped with the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki and joined the crew as Ian and Barbara left. He left to become the leader of the Savages and Elders.

Katarina joined the crew of the TARDIS while fleeing from the destruction of Troy; she had been one of Cassandra's serving girls. She sacrificed herself to save the Doctor; when a convict was threatening to kill everyone on a ship she opened the airlock flinging the convict and herself out into space.

Sara Kingdom was assigned by Mavic Chen the task of killing the Doctor. She kills her brother, Bret Vyon (played by Nicholas Courtney), and only then realises that the Doctor is on the side of good and Mavic Chen has betrayed Earth to the Daleks. She was killed by the Time Destructor in the death of Kembel.

Ben joined the Doctor with Polly and left with Polly, the two were nearly inseparable. Polly met Ben at a night club where Able Seaman Ben Jackson was moping over his drink. Polly was finally able to cheer him up, and they set out on their adventure with The War Machines. He also witnessed William Hartnell's regeneration to Patrick Troughton.

Jamie joined the TARDIS shortly after he led the Doctor, Ben and Polly back to the TARDIS on Culloden Moor. Jamie was one of the few companions to meet the Time Lords. He left when the Time Lords erased all memories of his travel with the Doctor except for the first after the Doctor's trial in The War Games.

Irregular as a regular, he appeared as part of UNIT for William Hartnell,Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy. He also appeared alongside Peter Davison as a schoolmaster. The Brigadier (promoted from Colonel) was never really a travelling companion of the Doctor's. His first journey using the TARDIS took place during the Three Doctors. He was assigned to help fight the Yeti in the London Underground, and for his effort was promoted to Brigadier and assigned command of UNIT, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce. His appearances were primarily Earth based, although from Earth he did get to fight most menaces, including Daleks, Cybermen, and Yeti. He witnessed Jon Pertwee's regeneration into Tom Baker. He has seen/met almost every Doctor (he has met the Sixth Doctor in books and the Eighth Doctor in Audio)

Zoe was a student at the Earth School of Parapsychology which emphasised logic and science. At first she lacked emotions, but this changed during her travels with the Doctor. She also possessed a photographic memory. Zoe was one of the few companions to meet the Time Lords. She left when the Time Lords erased all memories of her travel with the Doctor except for the first after the Doctor's trial in The War Games.

Irregular as a regular, he appeared as part of UNIT for Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, and Tom Baker. Benton was a member of UNIT from when it fought against the Cyberman invasion to when they defeated the Kraals. He travelled in the TARDIS once in The Three Doctors. He was also a love interest for Jo Grant. Benton started as Lance Corporal and was promoted to Sergeant for Spearhead from Space. Promotion to Warrant Officer was mentioned in The Three Doctors. He was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major for Robot.

After strange meteorites started appearing Doctor Liz Shaw was drafted in as UNIT's scientific adviser, until the newly regenerated Doctor was found. Liz Shaw was the first, and to date only, companion never to have travelled in the TARDIS. She left UNIT to continue her academic career. There was no proper leaving party.

Jo Grant was the niece of a cabinet minister who had her assigned to UNIT, and the Brigadier asked her to be the Doctor's assistant. She was trained in cryptology, escapology, safebreaking and explosives. She made a good impression on her first assignment by getting hypnotised by the Master and trying to explode a bomb in UNIT HQ. She left to get married and go down the Amazon.

Sarah Jane Smith was a journalist for the Metropolitan magazine, and stowed away in the TARDIS after sneaking in to a scientific establishment in the pursuit of a story. She was on the point of leaving the Doctor when he was summoned to Gallifrey. Sarah changed her mind and wanted to stay, but the Doctor dropped her close to her own time and somewhere that was not South Croydon. She witnessed the regeneration from Jon Pertwee to Tom Baker.

K-9 joined the TARDIS when his original owner, Professor Marius, was unable to bring him back to Earth due to luggage limits. K-9 was a robotic dog which functioned as a mobile computer/defence system. K-9 Mk I stayed with Leela on Gallifrey, the Doctor produced a K-9 Mk II, which remained in E-Space with Romana. K-9 Mk III was a gift from the Doctor to Sarah Jane Smith. K-9 Mk IV was also a gift from the Doctor to Sarah Jane Smith when K-9 Mk III was destroyed in an explosion.

Kamelion was an android that was able to disguise itself as anyone it's controller wanted it to be. It was found by the Master who controlled it until it joined the TARDIS to escape the Master's influence. Kamelion only appeared a few times, despite being aboard the TARDIS. Kamelion was killed at his own request by the Doctor.

Peri was rescued by Turlough after jumping into a lake. She travelled with the Doctor for some time before having the mind of Lord Kiv of Thoros Beta replace her own. Her fate is not properly known: during the Doctor's trial evidence was fabricated. One suggestion is that she was killed by Ycarnos after Kiv's mind was transplanted. The other suggestion is that she was rescued by Ycarnos and now lives as his queen. She witnessed the regeneration from Peter Davison into Colin Baker.

Rose was working in a department store until it was blown up by the Doctor. She was reluctant to join the Doctor at first, until he mentioned that the TARDIS also travelled in time. A bit like the Brigadier, Mickey rarely travelled in the TARDIS, but thought of himself as the Doctor and Rose's 'man in the van' - or 'tin dog'. Mickey was the boyfriend of Rose Tyler before the Doctor appeared on the scene accidentally creating a love triangle. Mickley tried to shy away from danegerous situations, and declined the Doctor's offer to join the TARDIS crew, but could be depended on in a crisis. After a talk with Sarah Jane Smith he decided to join the Doctor, and stayed behind in a parallel world when the parallel version of Mickey - Ricky Smith - was killed.

Adam was working for Henry Van Statten colating and cataloging alien artefacts. The Doctor let Adam join at Rose's request before the complex was filled in. After getting an alien link implanted into his head and trying to send details of the future back to the past the Doctor decided he couldn't trust him and left him back on Earth, still with the alien implant.

Captain (not a real captain) Jack Harkness, a former Time Agent, was an intergalactic conman; he was on Earth trying to con the Doctor, and was on hand to save Rose as she fell from a barrage balloon. He was willing to sacrifice himself and his stop in order to stop a Word War 2 bomb dropping in London, but was rescued by the Doctor. After experiencing the Doctor's lifestyle he left his conman persona and became an action hero. He was killed by the Daleks, but brought back to life by Rose. The Doctor, thinking he was still dead, left the space station just before Jack could get to him. He later found his way to Earth and became the leader of Torchwood in Cardiff. When the TARDIS landed in Cardiff he rejoined the Doctor after clinging to the outside of the TARDIS. Rose gave the gift of life back to Jack; Jack can be killed but always reawakens.

Donna Noble worked at HC Clements with her fiancé, Lance. Unbeknown to her over time Lance had been lacing her drink with Huon particles. On her wedding day the particles in her body were drawn to the TARDIS, which was in orbit, and she was transported inside, to the surprise of the Doctor. Donna is a loud character and often stood up to the Doctor. After Lance's death he offers her a chance to take a trip in the TARDIS, but she refuses, although they are destined to meed again soon.

Matha Jones was on her way to the Royal Hope Hospital where she was a medical student when she first met the Doctor, although she didn't know it at the time. When she got to the hospital she met a new patient - Mr. John Smith. Martha is very calm in a crisis, especially when the hospital is taken to the moon. The Doctor takes note of this and offers her a trip in the TARDIS. At first she doesn't believe he can travel in time - until he proves in by going back to when she was on her way to the hospital. After facing the Master for a year that was eventually undone, Martha stays on Earth with her family. After a word from the Doctor she gets a job at UNIT, and turns up for a short period at Torchwood Cardiff.
